Dubai Airport Layover

We have a 10 hour layover in Dubai. Unfortunately, as this layover happens during the evening and into the wee hours of the morning, we couldn’t justify leaving the airport and going into the city. We did splurge a little and booked a room at the Dubai International Hotel (http://www.dih-dca.com/dihnew/default.aspx) at the airport.

We were more than a little pleasantly surprised when we walked into the airport terminal. There to meet us was a representative of the hotel holding a welcome sign with our name on it. This person even expedited our trip through security screening and escorted us to the hotel, through check-in, and to our room. The room is “Holiday Inn +” and thus, featured all the amenities you would expect of this type of establishment; including free in-room WiFi, big screen TV, and even a complimentary fruit basket. Our room even has a large window overlooking the main concourse of the terminal.

The real pleasant surprise was that the hotel features a smoking lounge adjacent to the lobby bar with comfy chairs, big screen TV, a view overlooking the concourse, and even drink service. And better yet, there were no restrictions on cigar smoking! So, before heading back to our room to post to this blog, I enjoyed my first “Dubai Cigar” in the lounge; a Camacho Perfecto #2. Unfortunately, there were no other cigar smokers there but I did manage to meet a few fellow travellers and ended up giving a mini-cigar 101 talk for them.

First “Dubai Cigar”

For those who know me; you might get a kick out of knowing the room comes with a complimentary Prayer Mat.

That’s it for now; time to grab some sleep before our next 8 hour flight into Johannesburg.

Flight EK 230 on Emirates Airline

It’s a little bit ironic; we drove 3 hours south to SeaTac only to find out Flight EK 230 takes the polar route… it flew us north back over BC and then over the Arctic. As this 14 1/2 hour flight took us over the northern regions of the planet, we never saw night during the trip. Most of the flight took place with the window shades draw down tight. However, the ever thoughtful folks at Emirates Airline did give us the illusion of night… their 777 was equipped with LED “stars” that twinkled over us from the ceiling – how cool!

Boeing 777 star-lit ceiling

In case you’re wondering… yes, Virginia there actually is an airline with edible food! Even in economy class; not only were the snacks, bevies, and meals included with the fare, they were even recognizable as food and were flavourful. And we were even given real metal spoons, forks, and knives. In addition, each passenger was provided with real stereo headphones and a little “fresh-up” kit with a toothbrush, eye cover, and facecloth – all in a carrying case which can be later repurposed as a MP3 player case. Each passenger also had the (free) use of a seatback entertainment system including literally hundreds of on-demand movies and numerous other video, audio, and gaming options. The cabin crew was extremely courteous and attentive. The only thing that detracted from an almost flawless flight experience was the sheer number of small children; approximately a third of the passengers.  And at that, it wasn’t necessarily the children’s fault (given the 14 1/2 hour flight time). It was more disturbing to note the large number of indifferent and out-right negligent parents accompanying these children. By observation, it must seem to be the “cultural norm” for certain ethnic groups to simply let their off-spring run amok. Several children were seen standing and even jumping up and down on the fold-down tray-tables and even more were intransigently screaming at the top of their lungs. Things got so bad at one point that a flight attendant (with a sad look of apologetic resignation on her face) went around handing out earplugs to any who wanted them.

Anyway, I hope the kid-situation on this flight was an anomaly as everything else was excellent and harkened back to the golden age of passenger flight.

We’re finally on our way!

Despite Eron’s Bubonic Plague (she’s had the flu since Tuesday) and our usual tendency to be fashionably late, we actually got out of the house before 10 AM – we’re finally on our way!

We dropped off the truck in Anacortes and even with a stop for lunch at Subway, Eron’s dad was able to drop us off at Sea-Tac by 2:08 PM. This had to be the smoothest voyage through to the gate I have ever experienced. We were checked in, through TSA Security, and sitting at Gate S11 by 2:45 PM. And the aircraft is already waiting at the gate; we’re scheduled to board at 4:30 PM and be wheels-up by 5:30 PM.

Next stop… Dubai! By the time I next post, we should be in our hotel room at the Dubai airport. Apparently, there are places to light-up a cigar in the airport….

April 13, 2012 Long Table Series: 5 Alameda beers paired with 5 dishes

Table setting

Yesterday evening saw me at this month’s installment of the Long Table Tasting Series at the Pumphouse Pub in Richmond. This event was hosted by the folks at the Pumphouse Pub (http://www.pumphousepub.com/) and the guys at Beer Thirst (http://www.beerthirst.com/). The evening featured five courses specifically created by Chef Daniela Laci to be paired with five beers from the Alameda Brewing Co, draws for bottles of the new “Bad Bunny Imperial Cream Ale”, and a performance by the Van Dolls Burlesque Troupe.

The pairings were as follows:

Course 1 – Alameda KlickitatPale Ale with Ajiaco (Columbian potato and corn soup)

Course 2 – Alameda El Torero IPA with Empanadas stuffed with beef and cheese

Course 3 – Alameda Yellow Wolf IPA with Ceviche de Vieiras y Camarones (Ceviches         with scallops and shrimp)

Course 4 – Alameda Black Bear Stout XX with Stout-infused Paella (rice, pork, chicken, and rice)

Course 5 – Alameda Bad Bunny Imperial Cream Ale with Torta de Tres Leches con Arequipe (Three Milks Cake with caramel)

A lot of hard work put was in by the folks at the Pumphouse and the guys at Beer Thirst; my thanks to all of them for a great evening. The food was fantastic, the beers were incredible, and the atmosphere was terrific. I’d have to say, the only disappointment of the evening was the Canucks Vs Kings play-off game on the big-screens. Now, that was definitely Friday-the-13th-scary… but that’s a rant for a different blog….

Celebrating 13 Years of Cigar Culture with City Cigar

Erik, David, and Roger (l to r)

Saturday March 31st, 2012 was yet another typically gray and wet early spring day in Vancouver. However, there was at least one oasis of warmth to be had; the 13th Anniversary Celebration at City Cigar Emporium (http://www.citycigarcompany.com/). Erik Olsen (President of the “Society of Unrepentant Cigar Connoisseurs” http://www.westcoastcigarclub.com/index.html) and I had made the long, dreary drive into Vancouver and we were delighted to be beckoned by the sounds of celebration as we walked towards the door. The owners and staff at City Cigar welcomed one and all to their party with warm hellos, music, a veritable feast of a buffet, a great selection of cigars and cigar paraphernalia – much of which was discounted just for this event, and even special gifts for their customers.

We spent a good amount of time browsing among the unusually (at least for a Canadian cigar store) large number of cigar facings and lines. We also looked at all the other “cigar stuff” on display; the lighters, cutters, ashtrays, and humidors. And we perused City Cigar’s very commendable selection of pipes, pipe tobacco, pipe accessories, Hookahs, and Shisha. I should explain here that while a cigar store with a large, diverse selection is not uncommon to my readers in the United States; sadly, it is very rare for those of us residing here in the “Great White North”.

As luck would have it, just as we were about to take our leave; we ran into David Kariotakis, City Cigar’s resident Cigar Culture Ambassador. David and I were introduced when I first came into this store nearly thirteen years ago. At that time, there was a cigar lounge attached to the store (something since outlawed by Vancouver’s by-laws and the province’s fanatical, draconian, and hypocritical anti-tobacco laws) and we forged a friendship out of our shared mutual passion for cigars and the Cigar Culture over many an afternoon and evening of cigars, bevies, and conversation. I asked David about the founding philosophy behind his decision to start the business. He recalled that in 1999, the “cigar boom” had just about run its course and while there were a number of cigar stores in Vancouver and the surrounding area; there didn’t seem to be anyone championing the concept of a “Cigar Culture” locally. At this juncture, David made a point of saying he didn’t want to be seen as slighting any of his predecessors – he even specifically thanked pioneers in the local cigar scene (like RJ Clarke) for blazing a trail for his business. He noted that from the onset, his goal was not only to sell cigars but also to promote the lifestyle… the Cigar Culture. David went about this with an almost palpable passion; he introduced us (the local cigar guys) to the world of cigar events. Many in the local cigar community had never had the opportunity to experience cigar-centric events: there were few to none held in the Vancouver area. Over the past thirteen years, David and the staff at City Cigar have hosted many successful cigar events. The events are literally too many to list but the “best of” must include the annual “Smoke on the Water” harbour cruise, the “Cigars and Port” evening at the Sutton Place Hotel (with Port courtesy of the Portuguese Consulate and introducing the RyJ Edmundo), and the recent sold-out Cigar Dinner at the Shaughnessy Country Club (featuring the hand-rolling of Cuban cigars by Master Torcedor Hamlet Paredes).

David’s frequent business travels and familial responsibilities have made it rare for us to actually sit down and share the camaraderie of the cigar over the past few years. However, in just a few minutes of conversation, it was clear that David was, and still is, a gracious and passionate Ambassador for the Cigar Culture. Yes, it is true that City Cigar is in the business of selling cigars and accessories… where they stand apart is with their people. David and the folks at City Cigar genuinely promote the Cigar Culture; the camaraderie, the passion, the willingness to share knowledge… and they’ve done so for thirteen years!

My thanks to Constance, David, and the entire staff at City Cigar for being a cornerstone of the Cigar Culture in Vancouver. Congratulations on thirteen great years… may there be many, many more to come.

With cigar in hand,

Roger
